SOCYOUTH 300 is 15-point service-learning course nested into Campus Connections Aotearoa youth mentoring programme. Service-learning courses integrate community service with instruction and reflection to enhance the learning experience. In the case of SOCYOUTH 300, the community service involves youth development and youth work practice through CC-A. The course, including lectures, mentoring sessions and debrief, takes place every Thursday throughout the semester from 9.00am – 3.00pm. Across the semester dates students enrolled in SOCYOUTH 300 will develop therapeutic communication and relationship building skills with youth participants, and engage in pro-social activities as part of their hands-on learning experience.
About the Course
The course runs for a full 6-hour day from 9.00am – 3.00pm each Thursday of the semester with 4 of these hours spent in mentoring activities with the youth involved. This dedicated time is designed to enhance the impact of the experience for both youth and students.
Because the face-to-face hours for this course are much higher than for other electives, the number of course readings and the written component of the on-course assessments are reduced. A substantial focus is on practice-based learning and some assessments are completed during class time. Places in SOCYOUTH 300 are open to BSW, BSportHPE or BA students as an elective. Places are also open to BCom or BSc students as part of the 30 points that may be taken from other programmes. BA students may also take SOCYOUTH 300 as part of a Community Service in Youth Development Module.
