EDUC 747 is 30-point service-learning course nested into Campus Connections Aotearoa youth mentoring programme and available in the second semester. Service-learning courses integrate community service with instruction and reflection to enhance the learning experience. In the case of EDUC 747, the community service involves youth development, leadership, and practice, through CC-A. The course, including lectures, mentoring sessions and debrief, takes place every Thursday throughout the second semester.  The start time will alternate between 8.00 am on lecture weeks (which occur fortnightly) and 8.30 am every other week. The day will finish at the same time of 3.00 pm every week.  Students enrolled in EDUC 747 will develop a range of skills including therapeutic communication and relationship building with youth participants.  Across the semester dates, students will also engage in leadership tasks such as pro-social activity design and facilitation and/or coaching or counselling roles, as part of their hands-on learning experience.

About the Course

The course runs for a full day each Thursday of the second semester (see session dates below), 4 of these hours are spent in mentoring and leadership activities with the youth and students involved. This dedicated time is designed to enhance the impact of the experience for both youth and students.

Because the face-to-face hours for this course are much higher than for other electives, the number of course readings and the written component of the on-course assessments is reduced. A substantial focus is on practice-based learning and some assessments are completed during class time. Places in EDUC 747 are open to postgraduate students at the University of Auckland who are able to take a 700-level elective course
